What are invasive species?

Invasive weeds were first introduced into the country from other ecosystems and have quickly spread and out-competed our native plants. Not only does this prevent native species from flourishing, but it can severely impact biodiversity and devalue or damage the property. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (England & Wales) it is an offence to plant or grow in the wild any invasive weed species including giant hogweed and Japanese knotweed. Although it is not illegal to have these species on your land, you are responsible for preventing them from spreading. If they do spread then you could be at risk of prosecution and fines. Without intervention and the appropriate invasive weed controls and management, they will quickly spread around your site and the local environment. Some of our invasive weed controls and management techniques are on-site burial, trail digs, herbicide treatments, full excavations, sifting and screening and root and boundary membranes, to name just a few.  Common invasive weed species include:

  • Giant Hogweed
  • Buddleia
  • Mares Tail
  • Himalayan Balsam
  • Ragwort
  • Rhododendron Ponticum
